3 WILD camping spots in the Western Cape.
What do you actually need? Just the basics, water and food and some comfy gear. Sleeping at a beautiful destination after an arduous day in the mountains makes up for all the other luxuries you might not have.
Bainskloof:
From the top of the pass you have several choices consisting of idyllic hiking terrain and fantastic camping spots. With rivers and streams everywhere you are spoiled for choice for camping spots. The swimming holes in the area are my favourite during the summer months. There are plenty of peaks to climb too, Klein and Groot Wellington Sneeukop, Slanghoek Pile and Peak are some great options. Access to this area can be arranged through Cape Nature.

Matroosberg:
The private nature reserve with the second-highest mountain peak in the Western Cape. This mountain range is perfect for those snowy winter escapes as it offers an enjoyable hike with a path that is navigatable even when covered in snow or during a whiteout! A word of warning to always be prepared, in winter the temperature can easily drop to -10 at night. Better pack your First Ascent Helio tent and Ice breaker sleeping bag for this one. Despite the chill, a trip into the Matroosberg is always a true mountain experience!
Katbakkies pass:
Connecting the Koue Bokkeveld to the Tankwa Karoo is the Katbakkies pass. With rock formations all around and landscapes stretching out as far as the eye can see. No need for any hiking, you can wild camp right next to your car! Do note that this is a public road, frequently used by offroad motorcyclists and a popular spot to overnight. Take along all the water you’ll need.
